Research Focus: Symbiosis can be thought of as a negotiation. Chemical signals and cues form the language of this exchange. The chemistry of symbiosis cannot be understood without first considering the host, as both a responsive habitat for the microbiota and as an arbiter of cooperation. My research characterizes metabolites derived from host and symbiont that shape the ecology of the squid-vibrio mutualism.
