Microbial composition and function vary substantially between healthy and disease states, and sequencing-based studies have revealed distal gut community patterns associated with pathological hallmarks of metabolic disease, including insulin resistance. Metabolic diseases are associated with alterations in microbial composition, metabolic pathways, and diversity. Although the microbiota is known to modulate host physiology, metabolism and glucose homeostasis, the contributions of gut microbes on pancreatic islet physiology and function remain unknown.
