Position title: 2014-2015

Research Focus: Recent advances in genetic sequencing technology have given birth to a new era of virus discovery (ie. viral metagenomics). Using unbiased deep sequencing technology developed by our laboratory, my research focuses on the discovery and characterization of novel viruses in both captive and wild primates. In parallel to this work, I have also developed animal models of infection for several of these novel viruses geared towards assessing characteristics of infection including pathogenesis, immune responses, transmission, adaptation, evolution, tissue tropism, and interactions that are beneficial to the host. Several of these virus have human counterparts for which no animal model exists, underscoring the relevance of this research to human health.
